Message from Rabbi Knopf - Yom Hazikaron

Shalom Friends!

I hope that you were able to spend some time last week honouring the memory of those who perished in the Shoah.

This week, the calendar highlights the remarkable history of the State of Israel. Tuesday is Yom Hazikaron - a day of remembrance for those who died defending Israel and for those who were murdered in terrorist attacks. Wednesday is Yom Ha'atzmaut - a day of celebration and thanksgiving for the blessing of the State of Israel.

One of the most wonderful projects in Beth Ora was the visit to our community of Israeli veterans. Inviting these special people to Beth Ora helped us all realize how connected we are to our brothers and sisters in Israel, as well as how much we owe to those who risk their lives to protect the State and its citizens. On Yom Hazikaron, I urge you to spend some time thinking about this, and to attend the Federation Yom Hazikaron ceremony on Monday evening at 6:00 pm.

I also recommend this Yom Hazikaron video as well as this stirring video showing students what Mount Herzl should represent to them and to the people of Israel.

On Tuesday evening, we will be having our regular weekly Mincha/Maariv service at 7:45 PM, at which we will say the memorial prayer for those who fell in battle.

Please also join us for our Shacharit and Hallel service on Wednesday (Yom Ha'atzmaut) from 8:30-9:15 AM - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86133261896.

I also strongly recommend you check out this site over Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut for some wonderful programs, including virtual tours of Israel and a ceremony with the President of the State of Israel.

We are also very excited about our first ever Beth Ora home Shabbaton! Watch this space for more details, coming later in the week.

Federation CJA has asked us to encourage you to continue to make use of the Community Helpline by calling 514-734-1411 or emailing Ometz-Cummings-helpline@ometz.ca. The helpline is available to all members of the community. It responds to ongoing Covid-19 related needs, and provides information, community connection, resource and support during this difficult time.

Stay safe and keep connected,

Rabbi Anthony Knopf
