Message From Rabbi Knopf - April 1, 2020

Shalom Friends!

I hope and pray that you and your families are well and safe. Physical health is of the utmost importance and I urge each of you to continue to practice social distancing. We each have a responsibility to ourselves and to others to avoid situations in which the virus can potentially spread. Please follow all health regulations, now and especially during Passover.

I am delighted that Beth Ora’s activities have continued in full force and it has been a pleasure seeing many of you at our online events. Please see below for the details of how you can join me this evening to learn about how to get the most out of the Seder in these most unusual of circumstances.

As always, I am available for any of you who need assistance of any kind at this time (514-714-6559). I’m also please to let you know that Federation CJA has established a helpline for anyone in the community to ask for help. The number is 514-734-1411.

Federation CJA and the Jewish Community Foundation have launched a community wide Crisis Response Fund. To this end, they have launched a CrowdFunding initiative to raise more funds to support their efforts. Please click here for the CrowdFunding campaign.

Can You Help a Family in Need?

I know of a family who desperately needs use of a laptop. If any of you have a used laptop which you no longer need and which you would be happy to donate to this very good cause, please contact me on rabbiknopf@bethora.org.

A Lesson from the Covid Crisis

One of the lessons to take from the Covid crisis is the awareness of our dependence on Hashem. We sometimes live with the illusion that we don’t need G-d in our lives and can take care of everything ourselves. Witnessing the impact of this virus highlights the fact that we need G-d’s blessing. I encourage you to watch this remarkable video in which a US Senator reflects on one of our Tehillim, and how it expresses this very message.

Things to Watch at Home

A number of you have mentioned to me that you are finding all the news about Covid-19 to be overwhelming and that being at home so much is becoming challenging. I’m delighted to recommend some videos and audios which I think many of you will enjoy.

Jewish Reflections on Coronavirus

For those of you who want to use this opportunity to learn something new, check out this free online crash course in Jewish history.

I know that for some of you who are at home alone, this period is particularly difficult. I’d like to let you know about a Zoom session this evening for widows and widowers, entitled Facing Challenges Without a Partner: Tapping into Our Inner Strengths. The session is at 8 pm tonight, is led by Dr Chana Gelb and can be accessed for those who have installed Zoom at https://uojca.zoom.us/j/785064722.

I wish you all strength at this time. Please know that your Beth Ora community and family are here for you!
