Letter from Rabbi Knopf - Precautions and Day of Prayer

Shalom Beth Ora Family,

I hope and pray that this email finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy. As you can imagine, we at Beth Ora are mindful of all the challenges that are being faced as we approach Passover at this challenging and troubling time. Over the next few days, you will be learning about some wonderful online events that we have planned. At this stage, I need to draw your attention to two matters of an urgent nature.

At this time, we all need to stay at home as much as possible. If you are aged 70 and over, or if you are suffering from symptoms, or if you have returned from outside Quebec in the last 14 days, please do not leave your homes except in cases of necessity or exceptional circumstances such as an important medical appointment.

The Montreal Board of Rabbis has been advised by medical experts that a single case of COVID currently is estimated to transmit to between two and three new people. That means that, in 10 generations, a single transmission event can lead to between 1,024 and 59,000 new cases and, G-d forbid, to 10-590 deaths.

As I've mentioned previously, there are volunteers in the community who are happy to help members with groceries and other errands at this time. If you are over 70, are suffering from symptoms or have recently returned from outside Quebec, please email me (rabbiknopf@bethora.org) to ask for help with any errands, or ask a relative or friend to assist you. We have a duty to our fellow citizens to protect them, even if it means personal sacrifices.

Rabbis in Israel and around the world have designated tomorrow, Wednesday, as a special day of prayer. At 11:30 AM, I appeal to each of you to spend some time saying Tehillim. Here is a selection of Tehillim that people around the world will be saying at that time: Tehillim 20, Tehillim 41, Tehillim 121, Tehillim 130, Tehillim 142, Tehillim 91 and Avinu Malkenu.

Later on, at 6:35 PM, Rabbi Heshy Benshimon and I invite you to join us on Zoom for Mincha and Maariv. (see Zoom information below).

May Hashem answer our prayers and bring healing to all those inflicted with this illness, and may He give us continued strength to rise to the challenges of this difficult time.

With love,

Rabbi Anthony Knopf
