Shalom Friends,

We are still reeling from the tragedy that occurred in Meron. If you haven't yet seen my video reflections, you can access them here.

Difficult times like this remind us of the importance of staying connected to the Jewish People, globally and locally. I am pleased to let you know about several important Beth Ora events over the next couple of weeks.

Our Pre-Shavuot program kicks off tomorrow evening at 7:30 with an episode of Ready Steady Cook! Shelly Greenberg, George Lubell and Miriam Rosenzweig, together with reigning champion Glenn Caron, will each be working hard in their kitchens to prepare the most original and delicious looking cheesecake! And you have the opportunity to cast your vote for the best cheesecake (we only reveal the winner)! In the course of the event, each of our chefs will share with us a different insight into why we have a custom to eat dairy on Shavuot. As many testified last time, this is also a wonderful opportunity to see our community members on the zoom screen and feel together as a community as the pandemic lingers. You can access the event here

This week is the Canadian Mental Health Association Mental Health Week. Congregation Beth Ora, together with organizations across North America, is proud to be a participating organization for two important events that will be held in the next few days. Mental Health is something that many of us struggle with, especially in the face of the challenges of the pandemic. These events are important to help us to help ourselves and to help others. I strongly encourage you to attend the event entitled Resilience: Getting Back to Normal When Life isn't Normal. This event will be held on Thursday from 7:30 to 9:00 PM and can be accessed here. Registration is required.

On Sunday, a special mental health morning will be held, including the topics of Unmasking COVID: Strategies and Tools for Staying Strong & Well in the Days Ahead, and Beyond the Diagnosis: Life as a Jewish Depressed Mental Health Advocate. The program is from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM and you can access the event here. Registration is required.

It has been a privilege over the past few years to host Mrs. Esther Hochstadter's classes for ladies of Beth Ora. Mrs. Hochstadter will be speaking on Monday, May 10th at 1:30 PM on the topic of Preparing to Receive our Shavuot Crowns. I encourage all ladies who are available to join this great event, as part of our pre-Shavuot program. You can access the event here.

And finally (for now!): I am excited to let you know about our Pre-Shavuot learning program which will feature 24 different members of our community - each one tackling a different fascinating question about Judaism. Whatever your learning background, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn from one another, connect to the holiday spirit, and be together as a community. Please join us on Wednesday, May 12th from 7:00-9:00 PM! Please find the link here

We look forward to keeping you posted as we enter the holiday, and plan more exciting and enriching events.

Until then, stay safe, and stay connected!
