Thinking about the Sermon - Parshat Pinchas
Last week in synagogue, I discussed the vexed problem of resolutions. Why do we have such a problem keeping them?
I suggested that the solution lies in identifying, not resolutions, but rituals.
A resolution is a goal we have in life but a ritual is what we are going to do to get there. Losing weight is a resolution. Going to gym every day is a ritual. Being a better spouse is a resolution. Calling one's spouse during the day to see how he or she is doing is a ritual.
Look at this study which finds that 40% of our daily activities are driven by habit.
