From the Desk - Uyghur Protest
Shalom Friends! The week started with a bang at Congregation Beth Ora with a fantastic second session of our kids’ Chanukah program! Yasher Koach to Murray Itscovitch, Jacquie Ludwick, Rebbetzin Carly and Lindsay Besner and the entire team for putting together this great program! Last night, I was privileged to have the opportunity to pay tribute to my mentor Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks ZT”L. I am deeply grateful to all those who attended. For those who didn’t make it, you can access the recording here. Uyghur Protest I would like to draw your attention to a protest I am organizing against the persecution of the Uyghurs. They Uyghurs are one of the most persecuted people in the world. 3 million Uyghurs are imprisoned in Chinese concentration camps. Families have been separated and the population has been subjected to forced sterilization and abortion, forced labour, organ trafficking and other gross human rights violations. Our protest is one of many in cities across North America and Europe. We will be meeting outside the Chinese Consulate (2100 Saint-Catherine St W, Montreal, Quebec H3H 2T3) on Thursday, from 3-5 PM. You can find out more about the protest here and in this televised interview I did with the Suburban. I urge those of you who feel comfortable gathering outside to join me on Thursday afternoon outside the consulate. If you are not able to be with us, you can still join the cause in the following ways:
Contact your MP and ask them if they support genocide: hopefully the answer will be no and then you can encourage them to bring up the issue in Parliament to make it clear to the world that Canada will not be apathetic in the face of genocide.
Support the cause through volunteering, spreading the word on social media, and by donating. For more information click: https://www.isupportuyghurs.org.
As human beings, we need to stand in protest against dehumanization. As Jews, our history of suffering strengthens our resolve to stand in solidarity with persecuted populations. That is what my teacher Rabbi Lord Sacks taught me. Chanukah at Beth Ora Chanukah begins this Thursday evening! I know that many of us will experience Chanukah differently this year because of the need for social distancing. Nevertheless, we must find a way to be together!
This Saturday evening, Zoom Havdallah with Family Knopf will be combined with Chanukah Lighting. Please join us on Zoom at 5:45 to hear Havdallah, watch the lighting of candles and sing Maoz Tzur together.
We are excited to remind you of the Beth Ora and Chabad VSL Chanukah Drive-In on Tuesday December 15th, from 5:30-6:50 PM, in the Beth Ora parking lot. This will include a grand menorah lighting, Chanukah music, and a live fire performance!! We will also be giving individually packed doughnuts, dreidels and chocolate gelt! Please RSVP by Sunday, December 13th to win a $100 LED Window Menorah, to me at 514-714-6559 or email@example.com. The event will be followed by a car menorah parade!
